almost there

new license plate :) I love that the standard DC plate is so cheeky.

the wallpaper is gone (except bedrooms) and the plaster looks amazing. the walls look so clean! we're also refinishing the floors, but they are running behind... not a bad problem, just annoying on such a tight schedule. we chose a walnut finish and I'm really happy - but it is significantly darker than the natural white oak!

tomorrow is moving day!!

...and the work begins.

wallpaper started coming down today - a six-man crew was here bright and early. 7am was rough after an all-day bachelorette party yesterday : )

it looks so much worse than before. tearing out the wallpaper has exposed cracks, large holes, and reminders of art that has hung on the walls over the past 80 years. there are several layers: blue, flocked, aged yellow, unidentifiable brittle brown. the intermediate effect is a patina that faux finishers strive to achieve. not us. we are struggling with the 'perfect' white. the flooring contractor starts wednesday and the pressure is on.

we've spent two nights here now. having spent our married lives in small apartments, the space is a little unsettling. we can't constantly talk to one another from anywhere and sleeping with so much emptiness around us is bizarre. this will all change as our things are moved in and the basement is filled with a tenant. and the hope is to not fill it up with 'stuff' but to slowly acquire furniture we love.

still in total amazement that we are in a house, and it's our house. we are so blessed. excited for the weeks ahead as we make this our full-time house!!

packing

I hate packing. A lot. But we're trying to do this move for cheap without using friends... so we have been all over northern Virginia for free Craigslist boxes and found a moving company special on Angie's list (I love that service!!).
it still doesn't seem real that we finally have a house. and I'm so grateful that it's a house we love! only five more days until closing...

it's finally happening!!

well... we searched [seriously] for a year, made six offers, went through two contracts.  but it's happening! we're finally buying our first house : )  it's a gorgeous 1929 rowhouse in glover park.  we LOVE the neighborhood - phil can't wait to fly our aggie flag on game day!  the houses are full of southern transplants, and everyone hangs their college colors.  we have a strip of stores/restaurants/bars on wisconsin avenue and are only a few blocks from the naval observatory (and the vice president's house!).  there are parks and trails, and everyone has a front porch.  it feels more suburban than our current area in rosslyn.

i've decided to blog about our adventure - our first house, exploring a new neighborhood, decorating, gardening, entertaining on a budget, maybe a little renovation.  my wish is that it helps our families and friends back in texas feel closer.  please be patient as i learn the blogging process : )

hotel dickinson opens april 19!
